These individualized programs focus on building a working bond between you and your dog. An experienced MuttSchool instructor will provide a tailored, comprehensive and customizable training experience to help you meet your training goals and build a strong foundation for your dog. Our Private School is part of a winning strategy which promotes positive behavior, strengthens the bond between you and your dog while fostering training success.

With private lessons you can build a solid training foundation for your dog while scheduling at your convenience and at a location of your choosing—our facility, your home (travel fees may apply) or other agreed on locations. You and your dog will be working one-on-one with a MuttSchool instructor without the distraction of other dogs or strangers that you might encounter in group classes.

Your private lessons are completely customizable. Use them to ensure that everyone in the household is training in a consistent manner. If you have multiple dogs that need foundation work, then they can also be included in the lesson at no additional cost per dog. Private lessons can also be used to prepare your dog(s) for the arrival of a new baby or improve the relationship between children and dogs in your household.

Foundation FUN-damentals

for teaching foundation skills.

FUN-damentals is a series of 12 private dog training lessons designed to provide a strong foundation for both dogs and their owners. Each lesson is 30 minutes long, which is an ideal duration for owners with busy schedules. Plus, research shows that training your dog a couple days a week in shorter training intervals is the best way to achieve maximum training results. An hour is generally too long for most dogs to concentrate without feeling overwhelmed or fatigued. These mini-lessons make it easier for your dog retain what they learn and end the exercises on a positive note!

Even though the lessons are short and sweet, they are designed to be interactive and engaging, with plenty of opportunities for dogs and their humans to practice each skill. This 12 lesson program equals one of our foundations grade levels and is best scheduled with two lessons a week.

TutorTrain

for teaching foundation skills.

Put your dog on the right track with TutorTrain. This specialized program is designed to help dogs learn new skills and behaviors in a personalized, one-on-one environment. During a TutorTrain 30-minute session, your dog will work with a certified trainer on one specific skill, without the owner present.

This program is ideal for dogs that are struggling to learn a certain skill. With TutorTrain, the focus is on efficient, effective learning and is tailored to the individual needs of each dog.

Owners can expect to see progress in their dog's skills after just a few TutorTrain sessions. This is best combined with group classes or private lessons so you learn how to reinforce the newly learned skills.

With patience, persistence and Canine Coaching from MuttSchool, your dog can be the MVP of your household.

Start with the fundamentals

Just like in sports, dogs need to master the basics before they can excel in more advanced training. During your Canine Coaching sessions, you will learn how to teach your to do the essential eight skills every dog needs: sit, down, wait, stay, come, touch, walk nicely on a loose leash and go to place. You will also learn what it takes to instill a set of fundamental life behaviors that form the foundation for other important behaviors such as how to learn, problem solve and make good choices.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Consistency is key when it comes to training your dog. We'll give you plenty to practice so, please, set aside at least 10 minutes each day to work on specific skills and reward your dog for good behavior.

Build trust and respect

A good coach earns the respect of their team by building trust and establishing a positive relationship. Similarly, your dog needs to trust and respect you as their coach in order to be successful in training.

Tailor your training to your dog's strengths and weaknesses:

It's important to remember that each dog is unique, and just like with coaching a team, you need to train the dog in front of you, rather than relying on cookie-cutter methods that may not be effective for your specific dog. Just as a coach would adjust their strategy based on the strengths and weaknesses of their team, your MuttSchool trainer will help you adapt your training to suit your dog's individual needs.

Just like a coach trains their team to perform their best on the field, a responsible dog owner wants to train their furry companion to be a good citizen in their community. Achieving the AKC Canine Good Citizen™ (CGC) title is a significant accomplishment for both the dog and the owner. It demonstrates that the dog has undergone proper training and has mastered skills such as accepting a friendly stranger, walking calmly on a leash, and understands basic obedience skills. This title not only shows that the dog is well-behaved, but also sets a high standard for other dog owners to follow. By working towards this goal, a dog owner can strengthen their bond with their pet and build a positive relationship with the surrounding community.

Testing for the AKC CGC happens after the dog has completed MuttSchool's third grade curriculum. Testing is an additional charge. When you and your dog are ready, sign up for it here, or through your instructor.
